台灣學者數以萬位，幾乎都需要用英文寫論文拚點數，有的沒有能力達到國外期刊語言標準，有的沒有時間花在論文英譯上，因此形成了活躍的學術編譯產業，本課的目標之一是準備學生接洽學術論文的中譯英案子。我們會偏重社會科學研究，但也兼顧人文研究，以台灣的文化與社會議題為焦點。學生每週會閱讀並摘譯不同人文與社科領域（包括跨領域）的單篇論文或專書論文。本課會請講者介紹台灣的學術論文編譯產業與統計學方法在社科研究的應用；也會帶學生去台大與人文與社科研究相關的博物館，以讓學生體驗研究的現場與資料。除了訓練學生接案的能力，本課程最大的目標是拓展學生的學術視野，刺激學生的跨領域研究細胞，支持其翻譯研究與<翻譯研究方法>的學習。
Tens of thousands of scholars in Taiwan need to publish in English get the points they need for promotion, but many of them find it difficult to produce the level of English required by journals or lack the time to spend on the English translations of their articles, resulting in a thriving local translation and editing industry. One goal of this course is to prepare students to translate articles and book chapters, mainly in the social sciences but also including the humanities, with a focus on social and cultural issues in Taiwan. We will read and translate excerpts from representative articles in Chinese, matched with parallel texts in English, from the humanities and social sciences, proceeding discipline-by-discipline, but also noting interdisciplinary approaches. Invited guest speakers will introduce the academic article translation and editing industry in Taiwan and the use of statistics in social science research. Visits to related museums on the NTU campus will familiarize students with the sites and materials of research in different disciplines. In addition to preparing students to take academic translation cases, the overall goal of the course is to broaden students’ intellectual horizons and inspire them with ideas that support their own research in translation and their study of “research methods in translation.”
